Climate Science Webinars 10/12/2020 Inclusivity in Cooperative Extension Programming, With an Emphasis on Natural Resources and Climate Change Inclusivity in Cooperative Extension Programming, With an Emphasis on Natural Resources and Climate Change When: Oct 12, 2020 1:00 pm Eastern Sponsored By: USDA NRCS Conservation Webinars Through a case study from Washington, DC, participants will learn how to get feedback from historically underrepresented groups and tailor cooperative extension programs to people of different races, ages, and academic backgrounds. Some people, such as minorities and those from under-educated and lower income backgrounds, are typically excluded from conversations surrounding the degradation and improvement of ecosystem structure, function, and services. In an effort to provide an opportunity for under-served populations to be heard, inform content creation in academic courses and in cooperative extension programs, and create experiential learning opportunities for students at our land-grant university, we developed a survey instrument to gather public perceptions and knowledge on natural resources and climate change. This survey was administered in-person by undergraduate students at the University of the District of Columbia and online in Washington, DC. We will share the lessons we learned about effectively reaching people and how demographics of stakeholders need to be considered. Understanding what people know and perceive is key to designing effective educational programs, engaging in collective conversations, and building effective partnerships that find solutions for environmental problems that benefit the community. This webinar is presented by the USDA Northeast Climate Hub. Contact Jennifer Ryan , Science & Technology Training Library content manager, for more information about this webinar. Conservation of Natural Resources Webinars 08/18/2020 Inventory and Design Opportunities for Pollinator Habitat on Working Lands Inventory and Design Opportunities for Pollinator Habitat on Working Lands When: Aug 18, 2020 2:00 pm Eastern Sponsored By: USDA NRCS Conservation Webinars In this first webinar in a two-part series, planners will learn about inventory tools and whole farm conservation planning approaches to enhance pollinator and other wildlife habitat. Specifically, we will give an overview of key pollinator habitat elements and tools available to help planners evaluate current conditions, and then discuss a variety of opportunities for incorporating habitat for pollinators and other agriculturally beneficial insects (natural enemies of crop pests) into a wide range of landscapes and practices. The 2nd webinar, scheduled for October 27th, will highlight how to plan and contract pollinator habitat. Guidance will help planners improve the long-term success of habitat plantings with adequate site preparation, implementation, and periodic maintenance, as well as assemble a suite of practices to make the process easier for landowners. Yield monitor data recorded from harvesters empower farmers to make better farm management decisions especially if that data have sufficient quality attributes. This presentation discusses a range of issues surrounding factors influencing quality of yield monitor data and offers suggestion for cleaning that data with publicly available software tools. These practices are especially important for farmers conducting their own on-farm experiments and for basing variable rate applications for cost-share subsidies. This webi...
